Technical Information:

Recommended Bicycles for Granny Bike Assembly:

  • Canadian Tire Stores SuperCycle 1500.  Cost approximately $125.00.

Special requirements:

  • (1) The basic kit requires that the bicycles be of approximately the same frame and wheel size.  Ideally the bicycles should be identical.
  • (2) The bicycle must have a triangular opening at the top of the rear fork under the riders seat.  This is the attachment point and provides the lateral support of the conversion kit.
  • (3) A ladies style of bicycle frame is the best for mount and dismount access.  However, a men's frame style can be used equally well if the physical agility of the rider is not a problem.
  • (4) The front of the frame must have a opening for a U-bolt and frame protector.
  • (5) The handle bars require a short 2 inch length of straight tube running 90 degrees to the direction of travel to mount the turning arm.
  • (6) Bicycles that use caliper brakes must be side operated, not center operated, as the center operated caliper brake will interfere with the attachment of the conversion kit supporting cross members and steering tie rod.
  • (7) The kit for uneven frame and wheel sizes requires that the vertical supports on the front support be riveted into position at some predetermined angle off perpendicular.  The rear support cross supports will also have to be of different lengths.  The steering arms should be adaptable for bicycles of near similar size as they can be repositioning to suit.  Large bicycles size differences may require a special steering tie rod.  The special order form  must be submitted when ordering a kit for different size bicycles.

Limitations:

  • (1) The conversion kit is not compatible with specialty frames.  e.g..: Bicycle frames with long seat posts that has the triangular opening too low at the end of the rear fork. This does not allow enough clearance for the feet to clear the cross support when peddling.
  • (2) The front fork support must have a "V" opening for the U-bolt fastener for the front cross support.  Many specialty frames have eliminated this opening.
  • (3) The conversion kit for “The Granny Bike”, is not intended or recommended for off road or trail bike use.
  • (4) The conversion kit is not compatible with front forks fitted with shock absorbers.  The flexing of the springs causes the steering to miss align.
  • (5)  Do not make high speed tight turns.  The steering alignment will be compromised and the bike wheels will likely  be bent and spokes broken.
